A railway station now stands on the site of Holly Park former home of South Liverpool, from there it is only a few minutes travel to the confines of Anfield; home of the more illustrious Liverpool AFC.

The journey Wigan Athletic have taken from both of these grounds is staggering, many have travelled the road with them but not all of them completed the trip.

“More Cassinellis than Casino”

Smooth, silky and soulful. Just three of the words commonly used to describe yours truly. Coincidentally, it’s also a fair description of this months mix. A tad more soulful than of late – although we do manage to avoid the “N” word ( that’s Northern, in case you were wondering ) – with a smattering of jazz, a drop of hip hop, a soupcon of disco & a bit more jazz lobbed in at the end, just for good measure. Oh, I also manage to shoehorn in that Jazztronik track I raved over on the podcast.

Try it. You might like it.

The first question to ask is: Should we even be on the pitch as them? Is it even worth us turning up? Teams like Liverpool just don’t lose to teams like Wigan Athletic. Doesn’t happen: never, ever, ever. If their players don’t get you, then the ref will. Added to the fact they have Torres and Gerrard back and fit, along with Yossi Benayoun and oh yes, Glenn Johnson, it’s probably something close to a “full strength” Liverpool. They should muller us as DJ Spoony would probably say.

Do we deserve anything? Well again if football is about support then definitely not. It’s easy to forget when you see all the woolly back bell ends walking around town with their shirts on that Liverpool are the second biggest club in the country, have millions of fans all over the world, including tons from the city from which they take their name and travel in numbers up and down the country and Europe following their team. In Europe they have performed well but in the Premier League they have seen their side slip from the pinnacle over the last couple of decades and now have to watch United and Chelsea battle it out. It’s no fun having a microwave pasty for tea every night when you’re used to steak and chips you know. If there is a footballing pecking order, we are well down the list in comparison to Liverpool and to continue the analogy, Wigan Athletic fans have been eating dog food for the last couple of months and are desperate for a taste of something more palatable.

When Roberto Martinez walks into a room, there isn't the immediate sense of presence, as sometimes happens with major sporting names. Slight of build - even smaller than I remember him as a player - and immaculately dressed, Martinez looks more like an office worker than a football manager. It's when he opens his mouth and starts to talk, however, you realise that what you see isn't always what you get.

As Martinez speaks, the knowledge and passion he has for the game come pouring out. More importantly, the passion he has for Wigan Athletic is obvious. His greeting "There are no restrictions, we are all Latics here" is an early indication of his willingness to address any subject, however uncomfortable it might be. Such candidness from a present day Premier League manager is not just rare, it's probably unique.
